About Maurice River Wildlife Management Area

Maurice River Wildlife Management Area spans over 32,000 acres across Cumberland County, New Jersey, protecting one of the region's most significant estuarine and freshwater wetland systems. The area centers around the Maurice River, which flows into Delaware Bay, providing critical habitat for many species of waterfowl, migratory birds, and aquatic life. The landscape is a mix of tidal marshes, hardwood swamps, upland forests, and peat bogs, supporting species such as bald eagles, ospreys, and several rare orchids. The WMA also preserves portions of the Maurice River and connected tributaries, which are important for fisheries including striped bass and American shad. Historically, the area was important for indigenous peoples and later for colonial settlers engaged in oyster harvesting and timber. Today, the area offers an extensive network of trails and access points for outdoor recreation including hiking, birding, paddling, and fishing. Several boardwalks and observation platforms enhance wildlife viewing opportunities. Visitors appreciate the quiet, natural setting combined with diverse habitats that change with the seasons. The area's importance as one of the most intact portions of the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecosystem contributes to its conservation value and appeal to wildlife enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike.
